Remember the original post was how EVH was able to obtain that much gain without a pedal. Though by today's standards it may not be considered very high gain but back in 78 unless I'm overlooking no one had that kind saturation going on. Example of other music from that time period.... Zep, Aerosmith, Boston, Lynard Skynard, Kiss, Styx, Foreigner, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, ..etc. None of those bands IMO had anywhere near the gain structure as Ed did. Though its not as much gain as likely perceived you probably can't get too much more gain without loosing definition which is part of the appeal for that kind of tone. If you've ever tried dimming an 50 or 100 watt amp with a decent amount of gain it can be a little overwhelming to control it. Maybe most guys back then just couldn't play well enough to handle playing with that amount of saturation at that volume. Kudos to Ed!
