Modern Gaulish

The Modern Gaulish language was constructed from Old Gaulish using changes in sounds and grammar the first stages of which can mostly be discerned in the last attested stage of the language. It uses every scrap of available attested material at hand to date, and the whole process is meticulously documented. Importantly, it also takes into account changes in grammar and phonology that are shared across all surviving Celtic languages, and incorporates them. Modern Gaulish is not a reconstruction of what Old Gaulish was like, but a hypothetical construction of what Gaulish could have evolved into if it had not ceased to be spoken. On this day, the Modern Gaulish dictionary compiled by me and my collaborators comprises nearly 8000 entries. The German name for the reconstructed language is Neugallisch, while the ancient dialects of Gaul are called Altgallisch (Old Gaulish).
