Inside there is a tempest of oppositional forces fighting for balance, all detectable in this stunning 10 track album. Known for atypical destinies, Childs is no different. His talent, unique, indomitable and beguiling has taken him somewhere that few will venture. Working alone, in small quarters in South Africa with not much more than a microphone, a bass guitar and a home computer, Jake Childs managed to craft an album sui generis. Other than the musical equipment, all he had was a mirror, which is perhaps a fitting symbol for the journey inward that he was about to make. “The lyrics are me speaking to myself. Like the conscious talking to the unconscious.” If the unconscious mind is as Jung would argue a cistern of transcendent truths, then Jake has certainly entered deep waters with the Morning Star project. Addressing issues of decaying faith, the profane and the failure of religion, Childs explores territory that few dare approach without fear or guilt. Using the textures of industrial music, the album is lush in synthetic sounds and mechanical otherworlds. In spite of this decidedly industrial undertaking, you may have come to know Morning Star in a very different context. Working for over 3 years sporadically to finish this piece, Jake is better known as an international, globe trotting DJ. Traveling through the Europe, Russia, the United States and more, his reputation as a top notch producer and DJ gave him entrée to the international nightlife scene. His contributions to modern house music are significant.
